I am currently in my 4th Year, Studying Fine Art at Newcastle University.

My work focuses on memory, time, nature and its changes. I work mainly in installation, incorporating sound, film, painting and sculpture, to create a surrounding experience that aims to answer the questions posed.

At the beginning of yr 4, I decided to take part in the Bartlett Exhibition, for a chance to help curate and exhibit work during a time of COVID. Doing so has made me more flexible as an artist, strengthening my skills in media, particularly film and sound. The project I am working on for this exhibition is stemmed by the question:

‘Do you believe that nature plays a significant role in memories?

I began questioning this myself when reviewing my previous work. It dawned on me that nature was pivotal in the subject, creation and inspiration in many of my works. Nature has become increasingly evident in my more recent work; it has provided a means of normality in my daily life over the restriction-heavy year we have been through. I saw the natural world take a renewed role in the formation of our social enjoyment. I decided to seek the views of friends and family on their personal connection with nature and specifically to consider the role of nature in memories. When reviewing participants' answers, I found my perceptions of nature to be shared with others; together we found nature to be a provider or freedom in these unprecedented times.

Combining the different voice-notes sent to me by others discussing nature, I wanted to represent these shared values in the form of a sound and written piece.

Future ideas for this project

In preparation for when I am able to exhibit my work physically, I have designed an installation space using sound, film and paintings which will create a surrounded experience of light and nature. Combined, these illustrate a myriad of perspectives of the significance that nature plays in our memories. Devising a confronting and intimate space at the end of the gallery allows the viewer to be controlled by the different senses of human interaction with nature. Most importantly, through this installation, I aim to express the importance of nature in our lives; especially during the current situation.

I aim to continue to experiment with this piece of work, adding in different sounds I encounter on my daily walks, along with the voicenotes collected by friends and family, sharing their experience with nature and how it factors in with our memories.

I am currently working on a documentary, interviewing friends on a series of questions I find myself asking when thinking about Nature. TBC...
